Life's Lesson - Disappointments

One of the biggest life’s lesson I learnt is ‘How to negotiate disappointments?’

Anecdote:

When I was in school, I was fascinated to become a graduate in mechanical engineering. All went well till my school final, but the karma struck then and I ended up in 52% marks which was not sufficient to get into engineering education. As an angry young man I refused to get into polytechnic which was the only alternative. In the process, I stayed astray for a year, venting my frustration in smoking! A year later I reconciled to the fact that “If you don’t get what you love; then love what you have got!”. I took up my Diploma education and moved on.

Among many disappointments this was the biggest one I could barely accommodate. This early scar in my bosom created an animosity over the society which became my target. I alienated from groups and remained aloof till I reached 28! But the belly fire in me remained glowing for higher education although I was well placed in a reputed company, married with two lovely kids.

It suddenly dawned on me that life does not come to end based on one disappointment. With a positive bent of mind I went back to academia and won my engineering degree with a Gold medal and did my Masters in research in IIT Chennai. What’s the lesson from this story?

What is ‘disappointment’?
The very word dis-appointment’ has two connotations in it; ‘dis’ and ‘appointment’! In English language ‘dis’ stands for ‘negative’ state. ‘Appointment’ stands for meeting ones expectations.

Life is a series of disappointments only because the need of people is many and availability is limited. This means we will only face disappointments one after another. But remember:
- Disappointment wakes you up and makes you alert.
- Disappointment is a ‘comma’ and not a ‘full stop’.
- If one door closes, many other doors opens up. In fact better ones.
- The art of life is ‘How to convert ‘stumbling blocks’ to ‘stepping stones’.
-  your job is ‘never give up’. Keep knocking the door and one day it will open.
- Finally remember one great quote:
“Every problem is a seed of equivalent benefit”
This means nature sends you a problem as a seed. Don’t throw it away. Put it in the ground and pour water as it later grow and near sweet fruits. Another words ‘Every problem is an opportunity in disguise.
